Don’t Miss Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life at Tate St Ives until 1 May.

In February, we kicked off our museum of the month series with the mighty Tate St Ives, an art gallery and museum committed to celebrating Cornwall, and how it has welcomed and inspired artists locally and from around the world. We have thoroughly enjoyed sharing details about their wonderful Barbara Hepworth exhibition, Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life, her work, and how she came to settle in St Ives.

In 1949, Barbara Hepworth created a studio and sculpture garden in the seaside town, which became her home for the rest of her life. Comprising over thirty works in wood, stone, plaster and bronze, the museum and garden give a remarkable insight into the artist’s life and work. The garden itself was laid out by Barbara Hepworth, and most of the bronze sculptures are still in the positions in which the artist herself placed them.

The exhibition also brings together many of Hepworth’s interests in music, dance, science, space exploration, politics, and religion, integrating them with her own personal events and experiences. Originally staged at The Hepworth Wakefield near the artist’s birthplace, the exhibition at Tate St Ives has a special focus on Hepworth’s life in Cornwall, bringing together many of her most important works.
