We caught up with coach Cornish Kelpie (AKA Sarah) for the lowdown…
Tell us how Cornish Kelpie started
Cornish Kelpie grew from my love of cold water swimming. I really discovered what I call “the power of cold water” as a peri menopausal woman when I saw Sian Richardson, founder of Bluetits, on a menopause program on BBC television about eight years ago. She was inspirational and just said “get in that sea” The seed was sewn to start a Bluetit Group – I then set up many Cornish Bluetit groups in 2019. Cornish Kelpie Cold Water Swimming started in 2024 when I became a STA 2 Open Water Swim Coach – I made my passion my job.
What advice do you have for someone sceptical to get into the water?
Just have a go you’ll never regret it, but do it safely and join a local swimming community or come to Cornish Kelpie!! It’s life changing!
Where are your top three places for a swim?
I love to swim at Carbis Bay or at The Lizard and Roseland Peninsula – every swim I do is fully risk assessed and it depends on the conditions and tides where we swim weekly! We are so lucky in Cornwall to have so many beautiful places to swim not only the sea but rivers, quarries and in secret dip pools.
What are your sea swim essentials?
I would recommend swim shoes (weaver fish protectors!), a brightly coloured swim hat and a tow float – being visible in the water is very important.
Tips on warming up once you’re out of the water?
Lots of layers of clothing that are easy to put on are essential after swimming in cold water. When you get out, quickly dry off, remove your costume, and then put on layers for warmth. Good socks and gloves are always a bonus, along with a bubble hat and a coat or dry robe. Easy-to-slip-on shoes, like socks and Crocs, are popular and create a strong look! A warm drink and a hot water bottle are also a must!
Do you swim all year round?
I love to swim all year round and I am lucky with my job to be able to do this. I do love winter swimming particularly when it is cold, frosty and sunny!
