What to expect

What to expect

Your stay will include Mah Jong lessons each morning where you’ll learn all about the background of the game, get to know the set, the tiles and the racks. You tutor Caroline will show you how to set up, score and play a basic game and show you some of the special things to look out for. Over the course of the week you’ll pick up how to play a basic game and know how to play a goulash … (and know what a goulash is!). Caroline teaches under British Mah Jong Association rules, and she’ll help you find your way around the rule book.

We dedicate a space to Mah Jong for the week – this is where Caroline teaches using slide presentations and where you’ll play. Afternoons have been left free so that you can choose, perhaps stretch your legs, visit neighbouring Trebah or Glendurgan garden, play golf, swim or simply relax.

All of the sets and racks are provided for the week but if you can get your hands on the book Know the game Mah Jong ISBN 978-0-7136-8951-8 published by Bloomsbury Publishing you would find that helpful. This is needed for reference when you play.

Mah Jong is an ancient game played with tiles originating from Asia … it is the original melding game on which games like Rummy are based.
